Cosmetic Dentistry and Oral Surgery

A number of conditions require oral surgery such as impacted teeth, tooth loss, and jaw-related problems.

Third molars, or what we call the Wisdom teeth, are the last set of teeth to develop. They begin to erupt around the age of 16 years. However most people do not have enough room for wisdom teeth to grow in a place where it can accessed for good hygiene. Also, there are times when wisdom teeth fail to emerge through the gum line and become impacted between the jawbone and the gum tissue. These will result to pain, swelling, and even infection. These can also affect nearby teeth, gums, and bone. Therefore, dentists recommend people with impacted wisdom teeth to have them removed thru oral surgery.

Tooth loss due to accidents or infection can be fixed thru dental implants. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. It provides a strong foundation for permanent or removable replacement teeth which are made to match your natural teeth. It has a lot of advantages including improved appearance, comfort, speech, self-esteem, and oral health. Dental implants also function like normal teeth, so you can continue to eat without pain and with confidence. It is also durable and can last for many years. If it is taken good care of, it can last a lifetime.

Jaw-related problems such as unequal jaw growth can be treated with oral surgery as well. Some individuals have jaws that fail to match properly. This may cause difficulty in eating and breathing. While some of these problems can be fixed by employing braces, others require oral surgery to move part or even all of the upper and lower jaws to a position that is more balanced, functional, and healthy.

Oral surgery can be done to correct irregularities of the jaws to ensure a better fit if one is getting a denture. Aside from impacted teeth, tooth loss, and jaw-related problems, there are still other conditions that can be treated by oral surgery like facial injuries such as fractured jaws, broken facial bones, and facial infections wherein there is pain and swelling in the face and neck.

An oral surgeon will be able to assist in diagnosing and treating the problem. According to a new study, oral surgery can now improve or eliminate snoring. The procedure involves removal of excess tissue in the throat or mouth to widen the airway.

Oral surgery has now come a long way and there is more advancement that will be made to help any oral procedure a lot more simple and painless. GP
