Cosmetic Dentistry and Oral Health

Oral health is important because it affects a person’s overall health. It is very easy to take oral health for granted, but it is actually one of the keys to living life comfortably. It is related to the mouth, which includes the teeth, gums, and tissues. These parts of our body allow us to speak, smile, taste, chew, swallow, smell, kiss, and cry. Also, oral health can prevent diseases to invade our body.

Many people think that visiting the dentist is just about whitening the teeth, getting a tooth pulled out, or have a filling placed. A dental visit is about overall health. Whatever happens in your mouth can affect your entire body and vice versa. Your dentist can help diagnose many diseases and conditions that have oral effects. Once he or she has determined the disease, you can easily be referred to the proper specialist for treatment.

Certain studies have revealed that people who suffer from gum disease are more prone to heart diseases. There are instances wherein the infection in the oral cavity travels to the lungs and cause diseases such as Pneumonia. Pregnant women who have gum diseases also increase the chances of having a premature baby. Oral health can also affect other medical conditions like diabetes.

If you have an infection in your mouth, it can disturb your blood sugar levels and make your diabetes harder to manage. It is therefore very important to take oral health seriously because of its impact to the entire body as well as to a person’s appearance and personality.

The most common cause of oral disorders is smoking. More than half of the cases of periodontal disease among adults are due to smoking. The use of drugs is also one of the major causes as well as improper brushing and flossing of teeth.

To make sure that you have good oral health, proper brushing and flossing of teeth should be done everyday. There are brushing techniques that are very effective in maintaining healthy teeth. Do not ever ignore pain or any abnormal swelling in the mouth or in nearby areas. Make sure to make an appointment with the dentist as soon as these instances are felt. A good diet and exercise plus a good sleep always help even for oral health. GP
